The Classics Department proudly presents
The Annual David H. Porter Classical World Lecture
Join illustrious comics artist and author Glynnis Fawkes as
she presents her latest work, a graphic-novel adaptation of Eric Cline's
best-seller, 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed. Her presentation will
include remarks on the nature of adapting scholarship to the comics medium, and
on her long career as an artist
Copies of 1177 BC will be available for purchase and signing
after the event.
The Annual Porter Lecture celebrates the interdisciplinary
life and work of David H. Porter, Skidmore's fifth president, classicist,
musician, polymath, and punster extraordinaire. The event, long associated with
the Classics Department's Classical World course, was rechristened in David's
honor in 2015 in order to open new and exciting windows on the study of the
ancient Mediterranean.
Glynnis Fawkes is the co-author with Eric H Cline and
illustrator of 1177 BC: A Graphic History of the Year Civilization Collapsed
(Princeton University Press). She is also the author-illustrator of Charlotte
Brontë before Jane Eyre (Little, Brown) and Persephone’s Garden (Secret Acres),
among other books, and her comics have appeared on the website of The New
Yorker. She has worked as an archaeological illustrator around the Aegean and
Eastern Mediterranean, and she teaches at the Center for Cartoon Studies in
