John Douglas
Thompson is
heralded as one of America’s great classical actors. He recently appeared as
Ira Aldridge in Red Velvet, a play about the celebrated 19th
century actor who was the first African American to play Othello on the London
stage and achieve international acclaim. Thompson made his Broadway debut as Flavius, opposite Denzel Washington in Julius Caesar in 2005. Broadway: A Time To Kill, Cyrano de Bergerac
and Julius Caesar. Off-Broadway: The Iceman Cometh at BAM (Obie and Drama
Desk Awards); Tamburlaine at
Theater for a New Audience (Obie and Drama Desk Awards); Satchmo at the Waldorf (Drama Desk and
Outer Critics Circle Award) at the Westside Theater, Shakespeare &
Co, and Long Wharf Theater; Macbeth; Othello (Obie, Lucille Lortel, and
Joe A. Callaway Award) at Theatre for a New Audience; The Emperor Jones at The Irish Repertory Theatre (Joe A.
Callaway Award); Hedda Gabler at
New York Theatre Workshop. Regional credits include: Joe Turner’s Come and
Gone at Mark Taper Forum (Ovation Award); Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train at The Wilma Theater (Barrymore Award)
