Commas, like their fellow punctuation marks, make vital contributions to a sentence's meaning. But commas often confuse us; they can serve so many functions and turn up in so many different places. How can we tell which function applies in a given sense? Where, oh where, might a comma go? Sometimes a comma is required, and sometimes it may be optional. How do we distinguish the required from the optional?
