Event Details - Guest Lecture and Research Talk

In this talk, Dr. Javier Campos will be discussing his research on preparing Chilean educators for inclusive practice. Over the past three decades, Chile has progressively incorporated inclusion into its educational policies and regulatory frameworks, following broader international commitments emerging from the Salamanca Statement. While these efforts initially focused on the school system, more recent reforms have extended the principles of inclusion to higher education. This shift has coincided with a significant expansion and diversification of university enrollment.

These transformations pose a particular challenge for teacher education. Future teachers are expected to become agents of inclusion: they must learn to recognize and address exclusion and to create more inclusive schools and classrooms. At the same time, however, they are university students themselves, navigating institutions that must respond to increasingly diverse student populations and ensure their participation, learning, and sense of belonging.

Drawing on a three-year research project conducted across four Chilean universities, this presentation examines this tension by asking not only how future teachers learn to include, but also how the institutions preparing them include future teachers themselves. 

Dr. Campos has a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts and is an assistant professor at the Universidad de Austral Chile in Valdivia, Chile. In 2022, his co-edited book, (Re)building the Pedagogical Movement in Chile: Rethinking Teaching Work Together, was published with Ariadna Editores.
