Billy Hart is one of jazz’s great living drummers: a bandleader, educator, and master collaborator whose career spans more than six decades. A 2022 NEA Jazz Master, Hart has helped shape the sound of modern jazz through landmark work with Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Quest, and many others. He also appears on Miles Davis’s On the Corner, placing him in the lineage of some of the music’s most transformative recordings.
Hart’s discography includes more than 600 recordings as a leader and sideman. His life in music is also the subject of Oceans of Time: The Musical Autobiography of Billy Hart, as told to longtime collaborator Ethan Iverson. His current Billy Hart Quartet—with saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Ethan Iverson, and bassist Ben Street—has released three acclaimed albums on ECM Records.
Presented by the Skidmore College Department of Music.
