Join us on Thursday, April 26 at 6:00 PM for a talk and screening by filmmaker Razan AlSalah. She will screen her short experimental film Your father was born a 100 years old, and so was the Nakba (2017), which was honored with the Sunbird Award for Best Narrative Short at Days of Cinema Palestine. The jury said it awarded the film "for its poetic, multi-layered, and exquisite execution both linguistically, and aesthetically a film which at once gives insight into a highly personal experience as well as a universal disposition of loss, injustice and distance.”
AlSalah will also preview her latest installation, i am also We: the consciousness of decolonization, a doc-fiction media installation, a visual-spatial convergence of three video works on colonialism, displacement and the intersectionality of the Syrian, Palestinian, and Indigenous ongoing struggles.
About the artist
Razan AlSalah is a Palestinian media artist living and working in and between New York City and Beirut. She carries a history of forced exile and a travel document that takes her nowhere and anywhere. Her work formally (dis)aligns body, image, and place particularly using visual perspective, scale, and re-photography to create (dis)connections between different times, places and scales. She’s often thinking about how the image is an extension of the camera-body in space and how mapping an image can (dis)connect it from/to the viewer's body. Razan had her first solo exhibition i am also We at the Flux Factory in New York City, which will also be showing at the Ann Arbor Film Festival Off the Screen! series in 2018. TIMEBOX Beirut, a public art installation is in the permanent collection of Sursock Museum in Beirut.
