Tune into Tangwaves!

Tangwaves is now 10:00am–6:00pm

Tangwaves IV is a daylong transmission arts event in which we transform a hallway inside the Tang Museum into a tiny FM radio station (tune in at 87.9 FM) for a live broadcast of sound projects by individual artists, collaborative projects by Skidmore classes and student groups, and interactive experiments in listening and soundmaking.

Stop by the museum to catch their frequency, pick up a portable radio, and see the transmission in progress. Their low-powered station will have a limited broadcast range, so you will need to be in the vicinity of the Tang to tune in to the “original” signal. We’ll also be re-broadcasting the entire day on WSPN 91.1, albeit with a 7-second delay, so if you’re patient, you can also hear us the second time around.

Schedule for Tangwaves:

• 10:00am–12:00pm - Field Notice by Adam Simon ’19: A radio duet and a dialogue through technology, Field Notice is a durational sound piece that creates the conditions of play between terrestrial and digital broadcast technology. Listeners mingle in the intersection of these unveiled frequencies and, through their embodied presence, contribute their own.
  
• 12:00–1:00pm - Neototal with Kamau Amu Patton: Neototal is artist Kamau Amu Patton, whose exhibition Tel_ is up in the Tang’s mezzanine, and entrepreneur Matthew L. Scullin’s project launched in 2010 as a video and sound offshoot of a music and video art group they were members of, Official Tourist. Neototal sources content commissioned from online users at Fiverr.com, and incorporates Patton’s original poetry. Some of the pieces premiering in Tangwaves were produced in collaboration with attendees at February’s SSSSHHHH/SoundMind event at the Tang.
  
• 1:00–4:00pm - Null Point in Place: An early work by composer and bioacoustician David Dunn, Place (1975) is an extended interactive performance that utilizes voices, instruments, electronics, bodies, and materials found on site to build a dialogue with a particular place’s soundscape, ecosystem, and topography. Join us for this participatory performance of excerpts from Place, facilitated and led by Null Point Ensemble (Buffalo, NY) along with students from Professor Adam Tinkle’s Documentary Studies 251 Sounding the Museum course.
  
• 4:00–6:00pm - Pass the Mic: Pass The Mic is a WSPN radio show, Soundcloud podcast, and student collective that provides a platform for underrepresented communities at Skidmore to share their unfiltered experiences and art, and to discuss issues that matter. In their second year at TangWaves, they speak to graduating seniors Kayla Briskey ’19 and Brittany Newsome ’19, and offer a sound-guided meditation segment on positionality!
  

Tangwaves is organized by Tang Student Advisory Council member Adam Simon ‘19 and Professor Adam Tinkle, and is one of two events celebrating student creativity at the Tang on Friday, April 26.
