About Zines

Zines are self-published, do-it-yourself booklets that got their name from "magazine" or "fanzine." Zines began with the science fiction fanzines of the 1940s and culminated in 1970s with the punk movement and the commercial release of Xerox photocopiers. During the 1970s and 1980s, zines played a vital role in the spread of radical ideas. They provided a democratic outlet for marginalized voices that were not afforded space in mainstream print media. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in zine making. Contemporary zine makers focus on many topics including sexuality, politics, music, art, ethnicity, class issues, religion, and feminism.
