"oyster " - A Multimedia Opera
A biographical multimedia opera on the life of renowned ethnomusicologist and folksong collector Alan Lomax, oyster uncovers a surprising pre-history of modern machine learning and data surveillance in the story of Lomax’s 1960s attempt at the systematic, computer-aided study of the entire world’s folk musics, with the aid of a IBM360 mainframe computer. Lomax’s “cantometric” system proposed to locate deep truths about human cultures through the computer analysis of their songs--analyses which the audience hears interpreted in video, dance, and live singing alongside an imagined lecture by Lomax.
