Ta-Nehisi Coates will speak at Skidmore at 8PM on March 5, 2015 (Gannett Auditorium) as the SGA Speaker’s Bureau Keynote Speaker.

"Don't know if, in US commentary, there is a more beautiful writer than Ta-Nehisi Coates."—Rachel Maddow

Ta-Nehisi Coates is a National Correspondent for the Atlantic, primarily focusing on how race is lived in the U.S. today. Judge Hendrik Hertzberg, of The New Yorker, described Coates as “one of the most elegant and sharp observers of race in America.” He is the author of The Beautiful Struggle, a memoir of growing up in Baltimore during the age of crack. His June cover story for the Atlantic, "The Case for Reparations," generated significant discussion; the IGR program recently had their facilitators read the piece.

Coates has written for The Village Voice and is a contributor to Time, Washington Post, and The New York Times Magazine. He was awarded the Hillman Prize for Opinion and Analysis Journalism in 2012. In 2011, his Atlantic blog was named by Time as one of the 25 Best in the World. He was the Martin Luther King Visiting Associate Professor at MIT in 2012-2013 and the Journalist-in-Residence at CUNY in Fall 2014.
