Leonard Bernstein profoundly influenced American
intellectual life. His musical insight and ability to communicate with a public
audience made him a unique figure in the 20th Century. This program includes
Bernstein’s “Serenade,” an homage to Plato’s Symposium, and a reboot to one of
Bernstein’s popular “Young People’s Concerts” from 1962 with a live performance
of Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals.” Featuring legendary bassist Gary
Karr, and Skidmore faculty members Michael Emery (violin), Paul Green
(clarinet), Sylvia Stoner (narrator), and Anthony G. Holland, conductor. Alexander
Bernstein, son of Leonard, will join musicians from the original broadcast for
a panel discussion.
