The Skidmore
French Film Festival celebrates the closing of our year-long exploration of
"Coming of Age in Contemporary French Film" with a screening of
Gagarine (Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh, 2020). Bringing together
investigations of class, race, imagination, and wonder, this magical realist
film tells the story of Youri, a 16-year old who has lived his whole life a
vast red brick housing estate on the outskirts of Paris, where he dreams of
becoming an astronaut. When he hears of plans to demolish his community’s home,
Youri joins the resistance. With his friends Diana and Houssam, as well as
other local residents, he embarks on a mission to save Gagarine by transforming
it into his own “spaceship”—before it disappears into space forever. The film
was shot on the cusp of the actual demolition of the Cité Gagarine housing
project in collaboration with its residents.

the trailer here. For more information, visit the Skidmore French Film Festival website. The festival is free and open to the public; the film will be shown in
French with English subtitles. Refreshments will be served.
